It was common in the village to have children by the age to sixteen for a girl. By the age of about thirty, they would end up becoming mother of six to seven children if they survived. Hard labour in field, tending cattle and work at home kept them generally healthy but death during child birth was a common phenomenon. There were no hospitals or doctors. Even thinking about them was not possible because no one probably knew about such species in existence. All they had were few old ladies in the community who doubled up as mid-wife and had their own crude methods coupled with superstitions which worked most of the times. My father was also brought in this world by such a mid-wife who liked him very much. “Satvanti” would have been more than seventy years of age when my father was probably three feet tall. She used to walk down to my father’s hut and sit there for hours, at times helping my grand mother in her day to day work. She loved telling stories from Ramayana to my father and explained him how great was Lord Rama and how powerful Lord Hunuman. That was the beginning of my father’s religious mind-set. He later became very God fearing and followed all what was supposed to be followed by a true devout of Lord Rama. He was proud that his name was also “Ram” like that of the God.

1I was wondering whether these midwives double up as a nanny for the kid and the new mother as well for the initial period?
