Bhagwati always resisted getting married. His marriage was performed several years earlier. Unlike other boys who were dying to get their wifes by their side and share the same bed, he was always looking towards adventure and thrill of going places. He had seen his elder brother becoming a slave of his wife after marriage and lost his own identity. He felt that having a wife and kids are barrier to life of a free man like him. Army life suited him very much. His “Gouna” (Second marriage and ceremony of getting wife home) was postponed several times. He quarreled with my grandfather and ensured that he remained free. My grandfather and Hari did nothing which made them earn money. Therefore whenever the money was needed, they sold off part of their land. Prospect of Bhagwati going to Army was liked because he would now bring steady income to home. His wellbeing was not a criterion for discussion; rather instructions were given that without fail, Bhagwati should send money home so that the family could live in a better condition. During such times, loss of mother pinched him even more. Had his mother been alive she would at least kissed him good bye – not wanting to see money but well being of her son. However, times changed and it was only money what was needed at home. Love and affection took back seat and was directly in proportion to what benefit the rest of family got from him. During six months of training, he received several errands from his father and Hari for sending money. He scrapped off some and always used to send some money even after sacrificing his own comfort.
