By the time my father was about five, his eldest brother started demanding my grandfather to separate his piece of land so that he is free to do whatever he wanted. His wife was constantly finding new ways and method to ensure that they got maximum without flexing any muscle. Shyam, the next brother was just the opposite in all his characteristics. Like his father he too was a wrestling buff and even won several tournaments in nearby village in wrestling. He was very hard working, but again fields did not interest him much. He always wanted to do something new. At the age of about fifteen he too was married but did not perform “Gouna” (Bringing his wife home) as he wanted to be a free man. There was a lot of news of British government getting into war with some man named Hitler. He told his friends that another only white man’s war was almost going to start and British government was keen on recruiting young and healthy men like him to be soldiers. The mere thought of being in uniform and travel thrilled him beyond anything. Thought of death did not ever cross his mind as he was too charmed with the uniform of the soldiers and the possible affect his uniform will have on his friends. He made several trips to the Gorakhpur Military camp to inquire about his prospects of becoming a soldier. For several months, he did not succeed as he was scared to talk to anyone there. They all were so well dressed and crisp that he feared them. He had a burning desire to be like them holding rifles and wearing a cap and shoe. He wanted to be amongst the first few from his village to wear a shoe. For Shyam, his world moved around wrestling, thinking about becoming a soldier and earning a “Salary”. He however did not forget caring for his younger brother and sister for whom he felt a great deal of responsibility. Whenever he won any wrestling tournament, he never forgot to bring something for my father and the youngest sister Chandra and no one else. They both loved each other very much.Popularity: 4% [?]
