We discussed a lot about success but what success really means is probably not clear to most of us. While in a class with several executives of different age group, I happened to ask the same question. I asked them to define what success means to them. I was not surprised when most of them linked success to money and position only. Yes, money and position do form part of success but are not success in themselves. How about if we have money but not good health to enjoy it? What about we have position but not the peace of mind? What about we have money and position but not a happy family? A lot of such questions pop up when money is the only criterion linked to success.
Several studies have revealed that for a person to be really successful, he should first understand the real meaning of success and distribute the investment of his time and energy to balance the portfolio. A happy family, a healthy mind and body will automatically help you to grow in position and earn more money. Therefore the first step to be successful in life is to fix the goals of your and family happiness which should also include the healthy living of you and your family.
Often I have seen people ignoring their health for work and end up overworking to achieve the growth in their profession. In true senses an overworked man cannot deliver the best results. In my professional life of more than sixteen years, I have always seen that a balanced person delivers the best. Overworked person can at best give results in a short span of time but only to burn out soon.
A lot of my colleagues did get hooked to smoking and drinking primarily to have fun but later to beat their stress as well. Such habits are well known only to take a person down sooner or later in life. The most successful people I have met always follow a regime of exercise and fitness which keeps their mind healthy and alert helping them to grow faster and better.
How about your family? Do you feel that a broken marriage or a rough marriage will help you work better and more? Do you feel that you will be happy when you see your children with dropping grades and not bothering to pay heed to your advice? Yes, answers to all these questions pinch hard to all of them who defined money and position as their success.
There is only one line definition of success: “You are successful if you are able to keep yourself happy and at peace”.
