Networking does not come automatically but it is build over time with lots of selection and efforts. A political leader I knew was a simple businessman few years back, but his relentless efforts to get connected to people who would help him fulfill his ambition of becoming a political leader made him a popular and known person in his community. He was always ahead in organizing blood donation camps, visiting hospitals and people in times of crisis and most important, befriended media people who gave him a lot of publicity. His networking was a planned network and not something which normally many of us happen to have. He became a known figure in his area and even contested elections as an independent candidate from his area. Although lost in the first chance, he was propelled into a league of political leaders who helped him to hone his skills and network even more. This planned network helped him win the next elections and fulfill his dreams of becoming a political figure.

Creating a planned network is the best way to become successful as you are aware of the kind of people and friends you would like to have. A doctor typically networks with other doctors, hospital officials, pathology owners and even social workers of his area in order to increase his practice through referrals. Similarly a professor would network with people of his area, students who are already well established and publishers who would help him publish his works.

If you note, a successful network is always planned and nurtured. If not done that way, one may be popular with a lot of his friends, yet the benefits may not come. In several cases people tend to waste their time and energy managing unwanted elements in their network who always want one-sided benefits from other members. I have few colleagues who are very popular with their friend circle. They through regular party and also never think twice before helping others. All goes well, but few of their connections are always in need of money and completely self centered. My colleagues spend considerable time entertaining such people who typically should be pushed out of the network so that time and money could be spending only with those who reciprocate the favors.
